Clymer, Elaine Marie Longenecker
, 69, of Linville, Va., passed away on April 6, 2015, at home. Elaine was born in Dauphin County, Pa., on Aug. 6, 1945, and was a daughter of the late Henry Z. and Rachael Metzler Longenecker. A stepmother, Nancy Frey Longenecker of Lancaster, Pa., survives her.

On Sept. 4, 1965, she married James Clymer Jr., who survives along with her children, James Clymer III of Salinas, Calif., and Lisa Renee Clymer of Fresno, Calif.

She and her family moved to Fresno, Calif., in 1980. Elaine graduated from Lancaster Mennonite School, Lancaster, Pa., in 1963; from Goshen College, Goshen, Ind., in 1967; from Western Michigan University with a master's in education, and from Fresno State University with an administrative credential. She taught home economics at Bethany Christian High School, Goshen, Ind., for 13 years, taught parenting and directed a nursery for at-risk mothers and children in the Fresno Unified School system and held a vice principal role in Fresno Adult School, where she directed the program for adults with disabilities. Elaine served as executive director of Central California Mennonite Residential Service, a program for adults with developmental disabilities, for two years. Following her retirement in 2008, she worked as a tutor for Club Z and Reading and Beyond, tutoring in an elementary school until she and her husband moved to Virginia in April 2014. This past fall, Elaine volunteered at Fulks Run Elementary School as a reading aide in two classrooms. She also taught a third-grade Sunday school class and women's Bible study at the Zion Mennonite Church, Broadway.

Elaine held administrative roles in the churches where they attended through the years: Belmont Mennonite Church, Elkhart, Ind.; College Community Mennonite Brethren Church, Clovis, Calif.; and Mennonite Community Church, Fresno, Calif. She was very active at Mennonite Community Church: on Worship Committee and Care Committee, taught adult Sunday school, sang in music groups and as greeter - her smile and hugs welcomed all to the congregation.

Elaine is survived by her sisters, Marian Burkholder and husband, Jim, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Carolyn Horst and husband, Lowell, of Elizabethtown, Pa., Gloria Lehman and husband, Galen, of Singers Glen, and Nancy Pellegrini of Exton, Pa. As the first "in-law" in her husband's family, she was dearly loved as a daughter and sister. She thrived on extended family connections. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

The loves of her life were caring for her pet cats, hiking scenic California, creating sewing projects, gardening, bird watching, singing and putting thousand-piece puzzles together. Elaine was a woman of grace and selflessness who showed compassion and caring for others beyond herself. Her warm love and acceptance of a wide variety of people endears her to all of us. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 18, 6 to 8 p.m. at Zion Mennonite Church. A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 19, 2 p.m. at Zion Mennonite Church with Pastor Mike Metzler officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to "The Compassion Fund" c/o Zion Mennonite Church, 3260 Zion Church Road, Broadway, VA 22815. McmMullen Funeral Home
